Memory doesn’t fade.

It settles.

It gathers in the walls of old buildings, in forgotten conversations, in streets we’ve walked a thousand times, and in the quiet spaces between who we were and who we’ve become. Over time, those experiences don’t disappear. They become layers.

Memory as Texture is an ongoing body of work that explores those invisible layers through abstraction. Each painting is built, erased, scraped, rewritten, and rediscovered, allowing traces of earlier decisions to remain beneath the surface. Like memory itself, every mark leaves evidence. Every layer carries a history.

Rather than illustrating a specific place or event, these paintings invite viewers to uncover their own stories. Hidden symbols, fragments of language, architectural forms, and expressive gestures emerge and recede, revealing themselves slowly through time and observation.

There are no mistakes in this process. Every scrape, every drip, every buried mark becomes part of the painting’s identity, much like our experiences become part of our own.

The work asks a simple question:

If memory had a physical surface, what would it look like?

Perhaps it would resemble this.

Each painting in the Memory as Texture series is a one-of-a-kind original, created in my Southern California studio. No prints. No replicas. Only the original, carrying every decision, every revision, and every moment of its creation.

These works are not simply meant to be viewed.

They are meant to be discovered.
