ODE TO LANIER GRAHAM

48” × 48”
Acrylic & Mixed Media on Canvas

Some paintings are born from inspiration. Others are born from friendship.

Ode to Lanier Graham is a tribute to my friend, Lanier Graham, former curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, art historian, author, and my collaborator on the historic book The Color of Light. Lanier’s influence reached far beyond the written word. His celebrated chess set continues to be offered through the Museum of Modern Art, reflecting a lifetime devoted to art, design, and creative thought.

During our years together discussing painting, philosophy, and color, Lanier began referring to works like this as “Color Songs.” He believed these paintings possessed the rhythm and emotional resonance of music, expressed entirely through color, texture, and gesture. That phrase became part of my artistic vocabulary and continues to influence my work today.

Like music, this painting reveals itself over time. Hidden beneath its layers are fragments of memory, symbols, and quiet conversations that reward those willing to look beyond the surface. It is an invitation to slow down, to discover, and to experience abstraction as something deeply personal.
